Prescription Safety Eyewear

Prescription safety eyewear programs

Employer-sponsored eyewear that corrects vision and protects the eyes, with clear rules for who is covered, what is approved and when it's replaced.

In developmentSupplier and fitting arrangements are being established.

Why a program, not a reimbursement

Workers who need vision correction and work around eye hazards need eyewear that does both jobs. Without a program, it's common to see over-the-glasses protectors worn all shift, safety glasses worn without a current prescription, or prescription eyewear with no protective rating at all.

A program sets the rules once: who is eligible, which styles are approved for which roles, how requests are authorized, and how often eyewear is replaced.

About standards and markings

In Canada, protective eyewear is commonly specified to the CSA Z94.3 standard, and provincial OH&S rules (for example, Part 18 of Alberta's OHS Code) set employer duties for eye protection. Protective eyewear is tested and marked by its manufacturer. VPI does not certify eyewear, and every frame and lens in a program should carry the markings your hazard assessment requires.

How it works

How an employer program is designed to run

  1. Eligibility

The employer defines which roles and workers are covered, and at what level.

  2. Authorization

A worker's request is approved by the employer, with no health details shared.

  3. Prescription

The worker provides a current prescription from their own eye-care provider, or is referred for an exam.

  4. Selection & fitting

The worker chooses from approved styles and is fitted for comfort and coverage.

  5. Replacement

Eyewear is replaced on schedule, or sooner if it's damaged or the prescription changes.

  6. Reporting

The employer sees program activity and spend. Personal health information stays out of employer reports.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers about how employer eyewear programs work.

Ask us something else
Does VPI certify safety eyewear?

No. Protective eyewear is tested and marked by its manufacturer against standards such as CSA Z94.3. A program should confirm the required markings on every frame and lens it supplies.

Can workers choose their own frames?

Within limits the employer sets. Programs usually approve a range of styles suited to each role's hazards, and workers choose from that range with advice on fit and prescription suitability.

Who needs prescription safety eyewear?

Workers who need vision correction and whose roles require eye protection. Over-the-glasses protectors are an option for occasional exposure, but they can be uncomfortable, fog easily and reduce the field of view for regular use.

What does a program cost?

Pricing is scoped per program. It depends on the number of workers, coverage rules, eyewear requirements and how often eyewear is replaced.
